cold therapy and its benefits

A study monitored signs of overtraining in 10 professional swimmers who performed whole-body cryotherapy sessions daily during 2 weeks of intensified training. Those in the cryotherapy group had better sleep, less fatigue, and increased athletic ability.

By its analgesic and anti-inflammatory action, whole body cryotherapy first interested therapists in charge of athletes.

The first applications focused on the relief of shocks and bruises in athletes.
A whole body cryotherapy session can relieve pain and speed up the healing process. Over time, new applications have emerged.

The beneficial effects of extreme cold on the body were then used in the preparation of athletes, because of its action on the improvement of the physical and cardiac performances of the user.

Studies have also been conducted to evaluate the ability of whole body cryotherapy to heal psychological stress. In one study, 23 individuals between the ages of 37 and 70 with depression were followed for depressive symptoms after 10 cryotherapy sessions while continuing their prescribed medication treatments. The WBC treatment resulted in a decrease in overall scores for each symptom on the Hamilton Depression Scale, except for day and night mood fluctuations.

Cold also acts on the brain and more particularly on the hypothalamus, an area of the central nervous system.
This part of the brain plays an important role in stress management. It produces endorphins, a hormone responsible for pleasant sensations such as happiness and well-being.
Under the effect of cold, the hypothalamus will increase its production of endorphins, which will have an almost immediate effect on the person’s feeling of well-being.

Cryotherapy improves blood circulation, thus allowing to face the phenomenon of heavy legs and oedema

Whole body cryotherapy will improve blood circulation by acting on the vasoconstriction/vasodilatation mechanism of blood vessels.
Indeed, when you are in the cryotherapy chamber, the cold causes a decrease in the caliber of the venous walls (vasoconstriction), when you leave the chamber, the venous walls return to their initial caliber (vasodilatation).

These movements support the venous return, you will then feel a sensation of lightness quickly after your session of cryotherapy.

Whole body cryotherapy exposes your body to extremely cold temperatures for a short period of time, which can increase your physical energy and mental focus during the hours you need to be awake, while increasing the production of the hormone norepinephrine, to help you slip into a deeper REM sleep state during the hours you need to fall asleep.

The release of endorphins can lead to an energy boost followed by a state of relaxation that can help you reset your body clock. It’s also a safe and natural way to help you stay awake and focused after your flight, then relax into a deep sleep at night.

In charge of supervising the activities related to cryotherapy at MotionLab, I guarantee a treatment based on scientific publications and not in an empirical way. To do this, my R&D team and I regularly monitor scientific developments in order to constantly update all existing protocols. But we also carry out experimental research in order to validate the effects of whole body cryotherapy in different conditions and with different populations.
