TRAINING

SHOULDER REHABILITATION: WHAT’S NEW FROM A SCIENTIFIC AND CLINICAL POINT OF VIEW?

A 2 day training at MotionLab

15th to 16th january 2026

Ann Cools

Professor and Shoulder Rehabilitation Researcher

This intensive two-day course is designed for physiotherapists who wish to deepen their expertise in shoulder rehabilitation. Based on the latest research and extensive clinical experience, the program combines theoretical lectures, interactive discussions, and practical workshops. The goal is to update knowledge on shoulder pathologies — including rotator cuff tendinopathies, traumatic and atraumatic instabilities, stiffness, and sport-specific pain in overhead athletes — and to translate this knowledge into concrete treatment protocols.

The trainer

Professor at Ghent University, Ann Cools is an international authority in shoulder physiotherapy and the rehabilitation of athletes involved in overhead sports (such as tennis, swimming, handball, and more). She combines teaching, cutting-edge research, and clinical practice, with over 160 scientific publications and numerous international collaborations. A renowned speaker, she leads specialized training courses on the prevention and rehabilitation of shoulder injuries around the world.

Training Objectives

  • Update knowledge of common shoulder pathologies and understand the underlying biomechanical and neurophysiological mechanisms.

  • Apply clinical reasoning algorithms for functional shoulder assessment and differential diagnosis.

  • Develop personalized, evidence-based progressive treatment plans, including therapeutic exercises, mobilization techniques, and sport-specific recommendations.

  • Enhance practical skills in clinical testing, neuromuscular exercises, and manual techniques through workshops and hands-on sessions.

  • Critically appraise scientific literature and integrate the latest research findings into daily clinical practice.

detailed program

Day 1

Theory 1: New classifications of shoulder pain and updated knowledge on rotator cuff dysfunctions, instabilities (traumatic, atraumatic, functional), scapular involvement, and psychosocial factors.

Theory 2: Biceps pathologies, range of motion deficits in athletes, the role of the scapula; critical discussion on the causes of shoulder pain and the interaction between kinetic chains and central mechanisms.

Clinical Examination 1: Clinical reasoning, orthopedic testing, and symptom interpretation; hands-on testing workshops and clinical case discussions.

Clinical Examination 2: Continuation of assessments with participant experience sharing.

Day 2

Rehabilitation 1: Rotator cuff — scientific foundations of conservative treatment for tendinopathies and muscle imbalances, exercise selection, and practical session.

Rehabilitation 2: Instability — specific exercises (neuromuscular control, progressive closed-chain work), differentiated approaches based on instability type, and sports-specific application.

Rehabilitation 3: Mobilization techniques — angular and non-angular stretching, home stretching programs, mobilization with movement techniques, management of posterior stiffness and capsulitis.

Rehabilitation 4: Scapular rehabilitation — reasoning algorithm for scapular dysfunction, exercise selection based on muscular imbalances, exercise progression, and soft tissue techniques (pectoralis minor).
